What UV printing on metal actually does
Not a transfer, not a laminate, not a print glued to a board. What happens inside the machine, and why it changes what a picture can look like.

Plenty of things sold as “metal prints” are not printed on metal. They are printed onto a film or a transfer sheet and then bonded to a panel with heat and pressure. It is a reasonable process, but there is a layer between the image and the substrate, and that layer is where things go wrong over time.
We print straight onto the panel. Here is what that involves.
The white underbase
Metal is reflective and, uncoated, slightly grey. Lay cyan ink straight onto it and you get a muddy teal, because the ink is transparent and everything underneath shows through.
So the first thing the machine lays down is white — an opaque base, printed only where the artwork needs it. Same principle as gesso under paint: give the colour a neutral, opaque surface and it behaves predictably.
Curing, not drying
This is what makes UV different. As the head moves across the panel it is followed by a UV lamp, and the ink cures — turns solid — almost immediately after it lands.
Nothing evaporates and nothing is left to dry. There is no window in which dust can settle into a wet surface, no spreading as ink soaks in, and no colour shift between what comes off the machine and what it looks like the next day. What you see when the panel comes off the bed is what it is.

- Fine detail survives, because the dots stay the size they were laid
- Layers can be stacked in one pass — white first, then colour
- The panel can be handled immediately, which matters when everything is made to order
Why the colour goes further
The white base gives every ink a consistent ground to sit on, so the printer is not fighting the substrate. Artwork with a wide range — a bright light source against a dark field, which describes most of the Faith range — holds together on metal in a way it does not on canvas.
What it does not fix
A low-resolution file. Printing onto a rigid panel makes every flaw in the source sharper, not softer. A canvas weave is quite good at hiding a soft photograph; metal is not.
The material is not a filter. It shows you exactly what you gave it.
